Hello Pond Scum! I’ve been huttled in a fox hole waiting out
the end of the world. Someone finally decided to knock on my door to tell me
the world DID NOT end on 12-21-12 and also informed me I had missed Christmas
and New Year’s. DRAT! Oh well, at least I have a plan for the next pending apocalypse. Probably should invest in a battery operated radio to receive news too.
2013 has already had some ups and downs in the sports world.
Louisville said fuck you to everyone’s BCS pools and upset Florida in the Sugar
Bowl. The Lakers have finally realized that they are “old as shit.” Let’s not
forget the firing of oh say half the NFL’s head coaches and GM’s.
Here are a few stories that I have stood out to me thus far :
- Location, Location, Location
The BCS National Championship is being held in Miami next
week. Just in case you’ve been stuck in a fox hole like I was I thought I’d
let you know. ESPN talking-head, Jesse Palmer, appeared on my morning addition
of SportsCenter while I got ready for work. He kept hammering on about
distractions, claiming in all the cities he played a bowl game Miami was the
most tempting. (Having been to both Miami and New Orleans I might lean towards
Bourbon Street, but to each his own.) Notre Dame elected to stay around 12 miles
from the center of Miami’s South Beach. Alabama is staying in the nationally
known Fontainebleau
Miami Beach. Fontainebleau on the premises has one of the hottest night clubs in Miami. Palmer was adamant that the Tides choice of
hotel could end up hindering their performance for the National Title.
Firstly, the teams are there to play in the biggest game of
the season, I’m pretty sure the players know their priorities. And in case they
don’t I feel Nick Saban could not have been more ingenious in his preparations. Ensuring his team was in Miami the Wednesday before the big game. There is no rule that says football
players only perform well if they keep a strict schedule and bed time for the entire week. In fact,
getting to Miami early allows time for the players to enjoy ALL Miami has to
offer before Saturday night the earliest. Even more so, Saban is brilliant by booking his team in the
hottest hotel in Miami. THEY NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE THE HOTEL! The location is
right on the beach, expansive pools, and as I mentioned, a hopping night club
right inside. No worries of the 21 and over players sneaking out to other clubs
or bars because they can simply take the elevator downstairs. In fact, by
embracing all Miami has to offer it may build for a better, calmer, mindset
come game day. I guess we will find out Monday night.
- Jadevon Clowney has restored my faith in football
This hit will probably become known as the hit heard around
the world, if it hasn’t already. If you are reading this I shall assume you
have already seen this act of beauty. If not, well, click the link and come
back I’ll wait. … You finish yet? … Oh you wanna watch a few dozen times? No
problem I did the same thing… OK we good, awesome. Clowney proved to everyone
in football that it is possible to carry out a hard, vicious hit that is also clean.
Football dictionaries will all be updated after this moment. Next to Tackle/Hit
will be a picture of Clowney leveling his shoulder into poor unsuspecting
Vincent Smith.
Shoulder to shoulder, blunt force, that’s what hitting in
football is all about. Clowney is a role model for how defense should be played
in football PERIOD. Too often do we see NFL safeties and corners complain that
there was just “no other way” they could have tackled the offensive player.
There was “no avoiding” the head to head contact. Bull shit! I understand,
there will be instances that it will be unavoidable. However, NFL defensive
players need to take a look at Clowney, because he is proving there is still a
way to play hard football within the obnoxious rules set forth by the league.
- We Ain’t Ever Gonna Win with Andy
Andy Reid was officially fired as head coach of the
Philadelphia Eagles. He will most likely be the first fired coach to find a new
position. As an Eagles fan, I have numerous thoughts on this, but I will limit
myself for the sake of keeping you all interested.
1.)
The Eagles were never going to improve with Andy
Reid and he needed to leave. He was never the same after the passing of Jim
Johnson.
2.)
He is arguably the best coach ever in
Philadelphia. He helped provide some of my fondest memories of the Eagles. Also
some of the worse. I thank Andy Reid for all he did for the Philly franchise
and wish him the best of luck in the future. If he wins a Super Bowl with a
different team, then I may have to give up my faith in football.
To close, I like to leave you with the song I have had stuck
in my head ALL day. Thank you Apple Store. (The actual Taylor Swift song was playing, not this, put I have had the parody stuck!)
