THE PREMISE
So this is the premise behind the
latest in a long line of ideas of how I can write about sports in a way that no
one else seems to have thought of yet:
The NFL is a professional wrestling
governing body like the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and shall be called
the NFLWA.
Each of the 32 NFL teams is a
smaller independent wrestling territory that uses the NFLWA name or claims some
affiliation with the larger governing body.
Each NFL game is a wrestling card
that pits the best competitors from each territory against each other with the
real on-field results determining the outcomes of the imaginary wrestling
matches.
Each card has a main
event match in which the team or competitor that emerges victorious receives a
win for their territory for that week of action, regardless of the results of
the other matches on the card. This is indicative of how, at times in the NFL,
the team that plays the best doesn’t always win.
The collective goal of each
territory is to obtain enough wins to qualify for the Super Bowl Series (the
playoffs), that will determine which two territories make it to the season’s
final card, the Super Bowl, to compete for the title of Most Valuable Territory
(MVT), the highest honor that can be received. Basically, the Super Bowl is the
WrestleMania of the NFLWA.
Since the San Francisco 49ers are
the current holders of the NFL Championship Belt,
we will have the NFLWA San Francisco territory be the home of the NFLWA World
Heavyweight Champion. This champion, much like the NWA World Champions of old,
will go around defending this title every week of the NFL season against a
challenger from the territory (NFL team) that their corresponding NFL team is
playing against in the upcoming week.
CURRENT
NFLWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: Colin Kaepernick
All the competitors (NFL players),
managers (head coaches), and authority figures (GMs) can use the week leading
up to each card to air any grievances they may have with future opponents,
rivals from other territories or, in some cases, rivals from their own
territories.
Think for a moment about a heel
Jerry Jones, GM of NFLWA Dallas, coming out to spew praise upon Dez Bryant,
Tony Romo, and the other members of “America’s Team.” Think about a promo
battle between a heel Dez and a babyface Calvin Johnson as they argue over who
is better at what they do.
This is all obviously fictional,
but based off of real life events.
This is my attempt at looking at
the NFL through a professional wrestling lens.
Note: any questions you may have
about the logistics of this operation and how it can all feasibly work will
hopefully be answered as I continue the series. I’m kind of making it up as I
go along so bear with me.
