JETS FLY!

By Kyle

"We're going to win Sunday. I guarantee it.”-Joe Namath

Flashy, loud and proud, cocky, the celebrity swagger, all of this personifies not only the New York Jets, but also New York itself past, present and future. We aren’t conservative with our thoughts or actions we flaunt them, we don’t hide our issues- we express them… This is the New York way, and no wonder a team from New York jumpstarted the NFL from a semi-popular young sport, to the most popular talked about sport in America. Now travel with me friends, we are heading to the late 1960’s.

The world was changing, war, sexual revolution, America was close to reaching the moon, and one man personified that generations change, Joe Namath.  The Jets played in old Shea Stadium in the same building as the expansion MLB team New York Mets.  JETS from nearby LaGuardia airport soured over the bystanders while a man with fur coat sat on the sidelines. This man captured America’s interest, front-page news stories, magazines, owned a swanky Manhattan bar notorious in New York lore for many reasons.  This man and the Jets team was the flashy underdog newcomers, in an underdog league making the ordinary a thing of the past.  People wanted drama, escapism, and a care-free team in a world of deadly seriousness. The Jets gave people hope, that an underdog can beat the odds on the favorite Colts and be the first AFL team to win the Super Bowl.

Throughout this time, Jets where and still are a part of pop culture because of our outlandish bravado created by this man. Flash Gordon Savior of the Universe, was a Jets QB, Wonder Years wouldn’t be the same without the classic Jets jacket, and working men and women loved the pure optimism and pride of this team. Love them or hate them, the Jets will always be like the Jets they are named after, a team influencing pop culture because of this reason, we are loud….We let our presence be known, and not afraid to make people uncomfortable with our presence.

No matter how good or bad a season goes, I will always have hope for the Jets… My grandfather is a Jets fan, my father is a Jets fan, I am a Jets fan and hopefully if I have children they will be too, because what makes New York City so great is in this team and I feel my fandom is like a birthright passed down. So for all you haters, I only have one thing to say, J-E-T-S JETS, JETS, JETS!

Next week I will tell the story of the Jets late 60’s history
