Good Afternoon, Citizens of the Pond.
Today I would like to talk about 2 Things: The Philadelphia Eagles and fantasy football. Since my fellow Pond-Scumer Ray is doing a recap of his fantasy teams, I figured why not do a nice little recap of mine, considering he is in both of the leagues I'm in. So we will start with that first off before heading on over to Philadelphia.
- In my first league, All County, Turner Money Xchange (My Team) was matched up with one of the new guys to the league this year in Believe Blue. Led by Gronk, Jordy Nelson and Miles Austin, this matchup had the potential to be a PPR nightmare for me. I could ill afford to go down 0-2 in this league, as it seems to be ultra competitive this year and as reigning champ I would face a long uphill battle for one of the 4 playoff spots. Key players that I drafted included Megatron, Percy Harvin, Tom Brady and Antonio Brown. In my arrogance, I decided to do a little trash talking in Week 1, and it came back to bite me in the ass. In retrospect, that was probably the best thing that could have happened to me this season. I got slammed back down to Earth and made me refocus on what I do best.
For those that don't know I despise taking RB's in the first 7 rounds, relying on my research to unearth gems later on in the draft and free agency and allowing me to grab top flight WR's in the early rounds. Well that strategy didn't pay off in Week 1, but it sure helped in Week 2. Reggie Bush (my first drafted RB in Rd 6) went off huge, leading me to the top score overall for the week in the league and cruising to a 144-105 win, vaulting me from 9th to 4th and #3 overall in points scored. Huge matchup coming up against former league champs Black Horaces, so gotta keep plugging away if I wanna make it back to the top.
- In League #2 Kirby All-Stars, I faced my good friend and Turner Money Xchange Co-owner Gerald Lewis. Now even though this is a league I started, I never seem to do any good in the final standings, never getting better than 5th place overall besides my inaugural championship win. Double Dragons. led by aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson, is always a tough matchup for me. This year's team is my 1 aberration as I decided to keep Demarco Murray and draft Ray Rice with my number 1 pick to lead a pretty balanced team for me that also includes Antonio Gates, Philip Rivers and Greg Jennings. This one was pretty back and forth, but the injury to Aaron Hernandez and Alshon Jeffrey doing diddly led to a Dragon Zord victory, putting me in 2nd place in the Kel division behind arch-rival Ray and 4th overall in points. Hopefully I do better this year, and next week brings me a date with league newcomer and fellow Eagle lover (as well as winner of best fantasy name this year in my book) Steph and Mccoy meets World.
- Now that Fantasy portion is over with, It's time to talk about my favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. I promise this will not be a homer post, saying how my team is the BEST IN THE WORLD!!! or anything like that. I'm not a Jets fan or anything. (sorry Kyle...had to) Anyway coming into this year, there were 3 main questions surrounding the team. Defense, Vick's Health and Turnovers. Well, Juan Castillo took the bulk of the blame for how the D performed last season, so it's only fair to give him the lion's share of the credit now. Juan has taken perhaps the best draft class of the Reid era, combined it with what remains of the "Dream Team" free agent class as well as stalwarts like Nate Allen and Trent Cole, and turned it into something that hasnt been seen in Philly for quite some time: a punishing, in your face, feared D. Everyone flies to the ball and you just get the sense of something that was missing from last year. That something was HEART. You can see it now. Guys expect to make a play. No one looks down in the 4th quarter. That is probably the most important thing that has happened to the 2012 Eagles. They BELIEVE. Now, the banged up O-Line has got to do a better job on Vick, and Vick has GOT to stop making stupid superman throws into the end-zone, especially when he has some running room. The Joan had a good explanation to this: " Everyone is yelling at him like he's made of glass, and he's gotten scared to make plays with his legs anymore. We Need you, please don't get hurt!!" Basically, Vick needs to get back to a compromise. Be the quarterback we saw in the second half Sunday, but it's ok every now and then, when nothing else is available to unleash a Mike Vick Experience play for old times sake. If he is able to find a balance, the Eagles will be a tough team to beat.
Well that's all I have for today Citizen, be sure to check out our podcast, which is filming tomorrow with Ray hosting, as well as checkout our facebook page, twitter and email us or leave a comment to let us know how we are doing. Thanks for reading, and hope to see you next time.
